Christmas spirits called my name

Well once again christmas has been and once again santa claus came, but for every year you get older he seems to bring less and less :-)

Maybe its because of central heating and chimneys aint big enough to bring a lot. But to be honest getting things aint that big of a deal anymore, but more and more I feel the tradition becomes important and all that christmas brings. My father has a ridiculos collection of santas carefuly placed all around his apartment and people stop to watch his collection. I think thats awesome.....christmas time is also some days away from basketball, but almost every year I find some basketball anyway and christmas day I watched Knicks vs Boston and.....

......welll, it sucked like usually NBA does, poorly technical skilled players with super athletic bodies aint my kind of basketball, but to be honest the fourth period was OK to watch, but the rest of the game made me wish I watching the discovery channel instead.

Its great that NBA is ON again after the greedout, but NBA to me is Jonas Jerebko, Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, and some other players. I totaly think it has lost its supreme level, to many badly skilled players nowdays as I see it. You dont have to agree, but that how I see and also some older players that should have stopped playing some years ago. To name one is Vince Carter, he was the human highlight and well the light aint there anymore.

The NBA is strange, the move of Lebron James and Bosh to Dwayne Wades Miami was OK, but Cris Paul to Lakers wasn`t, there is chezz player behind it all and that Stern and well you cant say he hasn`t made the NBA succesfull because he has, but its just to obvious that he has one mission and that is getting Lebron a ring, no matter what.

When we watched the game we hade some talks about NBA, players, coaches and of course in that game was as always one referee in the center of attention. Cant remember his name, but calls ridiculos technicals, he provokes players coaches and he has always done that.

One person that watched the game asked why is he allowed to continue, well my answer was "He is a part of show" and his behaivor sells newspapers, airtime on TV and more......

Tonight swedish Jonas Jerebko is making his comeback season after his injury and his season will be a joy to follow, but other than that I will stick to euroleague, collegeball or even a local kids game which gets me more excited that NBA games.

Have had two practises today, we practise 13 hours in 3 days and the we rest a few days before the tournament in Lund, Sweden......that is a god things christmas brings the possibilities to practice more :-) and still get free time for the players and coaches.

2 days more of practises and then basketball detox for some days and then back to it again :-)

Bounds basketball documentary

"Bound" begins when "Hoop Dreams" left off, the characters going from high school to college in "Hoop Dreams" and in "Bound" the film begins following Robert Johnson in his senior year of college, as he works to graduate from the University of Oregon, and get his way into the NBA. The film focus on the untold story of the 1000's of college basketball stars who felt there whole lives they were destined for the NBA, but are in fact, bound for a career overseas...

Some great mixes from the tube

Great christmas present

My boys team (born 1998) gave me a great early christmas present in beating another topteam to advance to national cup final, which will be played in January. Of course its great with a final, but even greater was how we played the game even though we had a hard time scoring in the first half we continued playing like we want to do and the times, when we didn`t play like we wanted was very rare in the game.

And in the third quarter we played propably some of the best basketball we have played and still we missed some easy chances, but defence like animals and offence like Kasparov we took contro of the game.
Some nervouses in the final quarter, but we held on and won by 12points.

It was also so huge for us since we lost the last two games against that team before this game.

The energy in the gym was amazing, many realatives from both teams where there to support the two teams. Some parents had signal horns and more to make a super atmosphere in the gym that night like it always should be :-)

The day after I get an email from the ot headcoach from the other team in where he congratulates us and celebrates one player whom totally took over the game in the third quarter. The coaches from Værløse are both great guys and very humble in winning and defeat. Coaches like that should be rewarded much more than they are on todays clubs. If you dont scream for it, demand it, make trouble in most clubs you will be overseen and dont get the recognition they deserve.

This weekend I have many of my players of the girls and boys team on nationa team practises, which this year are open practises for agegroup 1998. That means that anyone who wanna try practising for a nationteam spot can, next season players will be cut down to the cream of the crop. I think its great some players that think they are good get a big surprize at these open practises when kids from allover the country come and some finally realize that they are among the best, so its a win win situation as I see it.

Heard a strange thing.....players are not allowed to where clothes/shirts with clublogo?

That I can understand at all......very strange, the clubs develop the players, pay for the players education and should be allowed to show their work with the players wearing their logo`s. Solution is otherwise to give the players nationteam clothes, so they will wear that instead.
I think they did/do a smart solution in Sweden with this. The players where their gameclothes to all the practises, some home jerseys and some awayjerseys and shorts. Its a nice view and for coaches watching so much easier to see who is who and from where and so on.Also very practicall when the play 2-2,3-3,4-4.5-5.

When they get nationalteam clothes of course they should where that, but until then......hmmm :-)

Leave the excuses at home

Well, I have written it before many times that Jonas Jerebko opened the door for so many nordic players in getting signed by Detroit in the second round of the draft 2 years ago. He has shown the way....it can be done if you really want it.

A few days ago he changed that open door to a huge gate when signing a 18 million dollar deal over 4 years with the Pistons.

Who will be next?

Leave the excuses at home and start polishing your god given talent or go play floorball and fix your hair instead for more hours than you practice.

Strange rules is a problem

Well, during my 19 years as a coach there has been quite a lot of strange "local" rules in the game of basketball and what I totally hate about many of this rules is that:

They are there to stop bad coaches from making the wrong decsisions which could be to only play 5 players in the whole game at a age of 13. So federations put rules like a players cant play more than 3 periods and everybody has to play at least one period.
Thats a rule I grew up with in the south of Sweden, which made many coaches only to bring 8 players to games. Most rules there are ways around, rules aint the solution its education and "banned from coaching", the federation where I come from was the first to put in a license for coaching kids in Sweden. Its a great thing as I see it since there are at least one demand on the coaches and thats a coaches education that everybody has to be present at the start of each year to get their licenses.

Super, but to get that license or get education was for many years way to easy, but changed with a great man behind the education part in Swedish basketball he really cleanded it up. he stopped his job at the federation some months ago, thats scary to me :-)

In Denmark we have some to me totally crazy rules at the age of 13.

Bonuspoint, if you loose a game in " D1 level " you still get 1 point if you used 10 players in the game.

If you win and you have used 10 players, you get 3 points.

If you use 10 players everybody has to play 2 periods in the game, you cant play some 3 periods and some 1 periods.

On the "D 2 level" you only have to use 8 players to get a bonuspoint.

To me the bonuspoint is simply so strange and having restrictions of how many periods you can play in mini basketball is fine, but I still think it should be maxumum 3 periods and at least 1 period for the players dressed for the game. I f a rule shoudl be used, to say that my player that practices 20 hours a week should play equal time as the player that practices 6 hours a week is simply not OK in my world.

Everybody that follows club and teams rules has a right to play, but how much should be decided by how much that kid wants and how much he/she puts into it.

We also have a no fullcourt press rule here in Denmark which goes into effect at a 20 points lead. Is great in some situations, but here`s the twist.

Earlier in my basketball life we hade the same rule in south sweden, but the twist with the danish rule is even after missed shoot you have run back to the middle line and play "D".

After a score I can live with, but after a miss that just goes against everything you try to put into kids at young ages. Going for off rebounds, stopping the ball early, transition "D" and so on.

Can you see this before your eyes:

" There`s a shoot at the basket, the defending teams rebounds and a quick outlet, defensive player on the other team is in perfect defensive position on the players whom caught the outlet, his/her instincts say "lets play "D", but rule says leave the ball and run back to midcourt"

This doesn`t make any of the players better as I see it.

I should say I have no understanding what so ever for teams that continue pressing with big leads over 40 points and so on. But all defense in full court is not a press. Maybe there is only a defender on the ball, but that here counts as a press and that in my world is a joke.

One coach one of my teams has played two times this season asked me to continue playing full court on them after 20 p lead "They have learn to handle it he said", we won with 70-80 points in both games, and I didn`t fullfil his wished the whole way through, first game we played 3 periods FC, and other game only 2 periods. I simply couldn´t use it for something good for my players, since it makes them come into a false state of mind, when we play a good team. In a game against a good team its more about controlling the ball, your man and steals aint that common especially not in the front court.

I like that we have a NO zone rule at this age, I like that we are not allowed to double team a players at this age, but some refs call help defence doubleteaming and that no win situation when you as a coach try to explain that is helpdefense and not doubleteaming to a ref totally without understanding of the game or the rules.

This year we have another strange rule and that is if you are born in the fourth quarter of the year you can play with a younger team (max 2 per game)I have gotten the explanation and I still dont get it, so you can this year play the champioship for boys born 98 with 2 boys born 97, hmmm

Why this rule, because many players born late develops late, but that is education on coaches part that is needed about that not rule that says that. And with every rule without education there a ways to use it wrong. I have had mnay players born late that have been dominant at early ages, there are so many factors that will not be solved with a rule about it. generally whick players are we REALLY talking about, its the kids that will be tall or very tall and born late, for most small players born in february or december is just a size factor, but for the "kid to be tall" there are so many things making it harder for him and being born late makes it even harder.

But we are really talking about talent identification and thats the key, not a rule.

Rules are sometimes great, but education is the solution combined with a license to coach, that can be taken away from you.

Aint given up

This blogg, but my life is really busy right now and I have to make some priorities and blogging aint that high on the scale because of that.

Basketball is going great and it looks like my shoulder injury courtesy of Swedish railways will be fixed in december at least that what i hope.

Both of my teams are working hard and they are both in development faces but so different, you could say my girls team is going through what the boys team did last year and its a continues process coaching kids, once you think they got it, you will be remembered just as quickly that they are kids and not pro players.

I go to practice 5 times a week with a big smile not always on the outside, but inside I´m just a big smile. Sometimes a wonder what my life would be without basketball and my only conclusion is would there really be a life without basketball!?

This game and development of kids just keeps growing on me and I get more attached to it for every year that passes. Right now I`m blessed by the naismiths goods in having two teams that wanna learn, something I have never had before.

I have had players in best cases 2-3 players on a team that wanna learn, but situation now is very different and it makes it so much more fun.

To a totally other subject: NBA

Shame on you players and your greed.

Shame on people calling Michael Jordan a sellout for protecting his team interests.
Remember the best there ever was, was never greedy even do he could have been when he was active.

NBA was dying when the greats, MJ, Magic, bird, Isiah, Barkely, The dream and others stopped playing, but Kobe kept it alive bearly breathing bit still and "Mr No rings ever" Lebron helped with tremendous marketing of himself, now all úngreatful players are making a parody of and pissing on what all the legends of the game created all because they wanna show one more car on MTV cribs :-)

Shame on the new ungreatful generation in the NBA and in sports in general, its supposed to be a honor, a luxury to be able to make millions on playing a game for work. If the saluary aint to your satisfaction go back to playing in the streets for free or go to some other country in the world and make money on a normal scale.

Its just a big shame......play ball and have one car less instead!

Its simply awesome

As a coach I`m constantly searching the net for new stuff and once now and then I found something that makes me happy and interested.

But most of the time its just repitition of more of the same since I have been "digging" on the net way back since 56K modem was the shit :-)

This saturday I was just bored and went on the tube trying to find some new stuff to get my basketballbrain going and I found it.

Todays technology creates so much opertunites for us coaches in "wrong countries" that wanna learn stuff.

Online basketball has been used for some time now, but most costs money, but I found this site: http://www.onlinebasketballclinics.com/

And they have posted 2 clinics in full on the tube for all basketball idiots to watch. Here are the links:

Ring, ring, ring

Well, my ringtone aint sounding like that but like this since I use this song made partly by one fomer baller from the naughty south.

It makes me happy and most phonecalls is also good things so double pleasure :-)

It rang earlier today and it was one of my boys players asking for a extra individual practice it aint summetime but that makes me happy and forget about all the 99 problems I got :-)

Kiss, when the devil knocks on the door

Kiss= Keep It Simple Stupid

What devil I`m I talking about, well its the devil that live inside all of us coaches, a devil that wants easy scores, success right now, perfection and exacution like robots. I been coaching kids for 18 years and that devil never leaves, but I have and still hold him in lockup for the last 14 years at least. You might say he`s in deathrow waiting to be exacuted, but the death sentence is never fulfilled.

Patience in development and a understanding why some things work briliant at some ages, maybe not because of your team or that you have the best offense in the world, but simply because of the players age and that they are not ready to solv a staggered screen, flexscreen or other advanced moves in offense at certain ages.

Thats why they work, not because of the exacution, not because its a briliant offense picked by you as a coach, but because of the defensive understanding is not on that level yet because of the age.

KISS and goodnight :-)

Enough with this greedout

"When is enough money enough money? NBA players greedy, million of people are without houses, clothes, food, medicine and many of them dont even got hope. If you asked me 20 years ago and say hell yes give them money, but now with the current money they get already HELL NO! Get over your greed and start playing the game that you used to love!"
Well I put this text on facebook today its really starting to piss of me off. I believe it tragical whats going on I grew up watching NBA when it had class and skilled players not "just" athletic players and most of the great are and will be from that time.

Players like Magic, Jordan, Barkley,  earned so little money even compaired to benchplayers today that almost never see the court except from yeah the bench. Yes it was many years ago but....money in NBA today is already ridiculos.

1984 Salary cap 3,6 million *, Player salary average 330 000*
2007 Salary cap 53,1 million* , Player salary average 5,2 million*
2010 Salary cap  58,04 million *, Players salary average around 6 million *
(* dollars)

I dont care how much the owners make, without the owners there is no NBA.

Play the game you love and instead of demanding more money for yourself demand that the NBA put in a "aid claus" in the contracts, which says that 10% of the salary goes directly to 10 different aid causes by the players choice to make the world a better place.

Worst with this NBA "greedout" is that players are coming to europe for big big money and the aftermaths of that we will find out, but my guesses is that several clubs will have huge money problems in the years to come thanks to the greedy NBA players that "wanna" play in europe.

Players like Tony Parker has risen in my thoughts bigtime, he plays in france for 2000 dollars/month which is a little bit different from what Kobe wants.....Say NO to KObe and the rest that want more than Parker!

I truly hope european clubs have the sponsors backing up the contracts with NBA players especially the big stars if they come or else european basketball will be in ruins in some years, with conseqeunces already next season for some clubs.

How much money is enough money?

Bad times is good

"Horsens landed the second import player for the next season. They agreed on terms of contract with Will Harris (198-F-86, college: Albany). The 24-year-old forward has graduated from the University at Albany in 2010. Will Harris tallied 12.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game in his senior season. The forward started his pro career in the IBL. He played for the Albay Legends in 2011 season. Will Harris averaged 11.5 points per appearance." from Eurobasket, com

Bad times economically in the basketball world is good for small basketball countries like Denmark I had the privaligue to watch a great import players a week ago in Horsens Will Harris. Its very rare with qualityplayers in the nordic countries although many are hyped bigtime before the arrive they dont live up to the hype.

Will Harris has bright future as a pro and unless some beautiful danish women manages to make him stay in Denmark he will be long gone and go off and make more money and play in better leagues after this season.

Most import players we get to the nordic countries are back up players or complete roll players, some manage to change, but most of them has played as a roll player for so many years and they cant make the transition and the get fired or gets to stay they season out not helping the team very much.

Players like Will Harris is rare, he`s a player that can do it all in offense and also can play defense. The only thing he didn´t show me was leadership, when the team played bad and he let his teammates take way to many shoots. I think he played the whole game, but for like 7-8 minutes he didn`t get to shoot the ball and still he scored with breaking to much sweat over 30points.

Så for some countries bad times moneywise is good, since I dont believe a player like Will Harris would come here in good money times.

Will Harris could average 40+points if his teamates understands how to and when to give him the ball and get f**k out of his way :-)

The rollercoaster ride continues

Well the last year or so has really been a rollercoaster for me, so many ups and downs and laughs and cries. Most people see me almost always smiling and especially in the gym and thats the person I`m, but this last year or so has really demanded good acting skills of me to keep my personality as I wanted and how it normally is.

Almost all problems comes from my injury on 12th of september last year and finally today after 13 months I got the message whats wrong with my shoulder its not good but looks to be something they can fix with a operation, so now its a wait again for 5-6 weeks before a surgeon takes a look at it. Hopefully that will fix the pain I live with 24-7.

Its really starting to get to me mentally and I`m impressed by myself that I have managed to push through the pain for so many months. So many times I have felt like "crybaby" and so many doubting faces I have seen during this last year, when I explain my problems. Its VERY hard for people to understand or feel a injury that they cant see.
They still cant see my injury, they cant feel my pain, but atleast now I know whats wrong and my pain is more real than ever before.

Plain and simple I shouldn´t work with this injury since it keeps the inflamation going and that of course transfers to the rest of the body. I cant count the days when I feel I could sleep forever, after 3-4 days of work, there is nothing left and in practices I squeeze the last out of my body. But not to work is not a option, so I have to push on, but I really hope the operation will fix my problems, so all can get back to normal.

My love for basketball keeps me going, after a tough day/week with the pain a go to practice and forget almost about it, but reminded in practices when I cant show the drill or reach for the ball. Then I feel I cant be the best coach I can be and maybe that sounds silly, but that haunts me bigtime.

The parents for my two teams are a huge supportsystem, they are really trying to help me in so many ways and I will be forever greatful for that. But taking help from others, when you normally are used to manage by your own is very hard and filled with a strange kind of shame. I know it shouldn´t i have helped so many during my 19years as a coach, but still it does.

To ask for help instead of giving help is very very different.

I`m so greatful for the people around me here in Hørsholm and I guess thats really what this blogg is about.
To be succesful or happy call it whatever, you have to have good people around you and I really have that nowdays.

Just like a bad pass often leads to a bad shoot a injury often leads to other problems and it has for me, but deep down I`m a fighter, winner and I WILL NOT let this injury courtesy of the swedish railways defeat me. I WILL win this time also, but this time with help.........and time.

THANKS!

Last post was 30 of August

And since then lots of things has happened, my cellphone has died and resurrected again like someone from the bible. I have with many others managed to arrange the first Boys 98 Pre Season Invitational in the weekend of 2-4 of september. A tournament with 7 invited teams and of course my team from Horsholm Basketball

Winners was 08 Fryhuset from Sweden that also last season was nordic champions.
Runner up was ALBA Berlin from Germany and third place was taken by Norrkoping Dolphins that beat my team for the 3rd spot.

Lots of great games and one reason for that was the level of the refs that I had brought from Poland. They where excellent and held the same level all through the tournament and called it like it should be called. Many refs from Sweden and denmarks could have learned a lot by watching these refs in action.

On sunday at the tournament we managed also to get the Young Coaches Academy started with 3 clinics. Whats new with YCA this season is that it goes out to all new and young coaches in denmark and there was a great turnout at the first with 14 in attendence.

The weekend after the tournament (9-11)I went to Stockholm for a youth tournament with my girls 98 to play with 3 even teams in all 24 of 25 players went on this trip to Blackebergs tournament
We had some great games but also a trip with a Harry Potter train

on our way up to stockholm, the train was from 1960 (no joke I asked) and we where delayed almost 2 hours because of different things, one thing was a lady who had to much time to drink red wine and ambulance had to come. At start from malmoe the train was already 50 minutes late, but thanks to the tournament staff our games in fridat was scheduled later so we got to play them. Everybody was happy with that accept for one ref whom I guess dont have any love for the sport at all and he stressed already stressed girls by almost helping (yelling every 20 second, hurry up) with putting on their shoes.

Great tournament and teams learned a lot I can recomend it.

Guess I`m back :-)

Spain vs France in Eurobasket final, will be a nice game, but cant understand that Russia manged to lose to france, but one answer is of course Tony Parker.

Macedonia with Mchelab thats an upgrade if there ever was one. Warp speed captain, YES sir and *meep* *meep*

I dont hear you!?

Well basketball is a world sport all almost everything is the same except NBA withits special rules, but there are differences and they are somethings huge in the cultural side of it.

Yesterday I watched the Nebraska Huskers play against Hørsholm ladies team and the day after against the danish womens nationalteam. The differences hits you directly when you enter the gym on the warmups. Nebraska owned the gym from they started warming up until the gym was empty.

They make så much noice in the warmups and YES sometimes its to much, but the effect it had especially the Hørsholms ladiesteam is huge. Some talk about winning the warmups and they won it big and already before the game had started they had put small mental ghosts in the head of danish players.

When game was played the Nebraska squad talked more in offense than the danish did in defense and that says a lot. But to be totally honest if you dont find a balance with what you say the effects will be less and less of a factor.

I mean talking just to talk is not the goal, but to use voice to controll the game in offense and defense is something totally different.

Nebraska is ranked around 100 in the states and this team had many first and second year students, so they lack a lot of experience but what passion they play with. American athleets in almost every sport are known for their hustle, the never give up attitude that makes less of a talented player outplay the more talented player.

That was a factor in both games, they crash the bords every single time for hustleplays and they go hard.

Another difference is the unity they have on the team you can almost taste it in the gym and they are liek usual very good at creating that unity. Collegeteams alway have nice teamclothes, the communicate loudly, the are focuses on the tasks, they have lots of people around the team ass coaches, managers, adm personal, phsyical and more. There are all the keys to creat a good enviroment for the player to develop. Of course you can always discuss player development in college, focus is winning but still the players if the choose to have all the possibilities in the world to develop, but focus will be on winning so the extra works needs to be done before and after.

After the game sunday I had 11 of my 25 girls born 98 in the gym and players and coach of Nebraska talked to them about college and whats that like. The Nebraska squad was awesome in what they did and the where truly rolemodels for our sport.

After they talked with the girls they arranged something special. Alla of my girls got a Nebraska shirt, but there was a problem they only had 7 new shirts left. Problem was solved quikly when some of their players took of there own shirts and handed then to the girls. A great experience during the game and a great eperience after the game.

Will some of my girls play collegeball in the future only time wil tell, but after this talk with Nebraska players and coach its more likely that some will. If you dont know what the possibilties for playing basketball in the future are, what motivates you to continue practising and working hard?

I have my thinking hat on

Well its time for another season as a coach and new season and also one more new team for me means that there are new players, new parents and all that comes with it.

New ass coaches to work with and it reallt takes some planning or else its to easy to go the wrong way or simply focus on the wrong things or the right things at the wrong time. Bad either way, so I have used a couple of hours to get some ink on paper.

I`m satisfied with it and really looking forward to have all my players back from vacations within 2 weeks. Season is planned to 95% only things left is really to decide what tournaments we will participate in during the year and thats the easy part compaired to many other things.

Tonight meeting with the girls teams ass coaches and we will go through some things and plan parents meeting and some other stuff for this season.

First time in many years I work a normla job and train 2 teams and all planning that comes with it. I´m glad I have som many years in my backpack as a coach so I have done these things so many times before and some things I can use again and again until I decide to change it for whatever reason that might be.

Now some food and then meeting
Greatest game in the world B A S K E T B A L L !

Long or short does it really matter?

Of course it matters in a sport like Basketball, but I beleive we often get stuck in some stupid inch decider on whom can play or cant play. Its not 2,5cm which will decide that, but when many coaches have to choose they go for the centimeters. Same coaches that would say Boykins, Nate Robinson, Mugsy Bouges, Spud Webb, Allen Iverson are to short or skinny to play on the high levels.

Its been proven so many times by the shorter players that it can be done, BUT the competition for thoose spots in the rosters are so much more harder than for the player who is 205cm or compered to the player that is 220cm nearly non excisting.

The shorter player has to be sharp as hell on certain skills to make it and I think one of the biggest obsticals is their surrounding family, friends and coaches that say they cant make it because of their size.

What is making it?

If making it is just to play in the NBA or Euroleague well maybe those people are close to truth, but to me being th ebest you can be is the goal and that means playing pro ball in some country is making it, not just NBA or Euroleague. College basketball is full of shorter skilled players and just like Allen Iverson that was told he was to short and skinny to play in NBA, you can also prove them wrong.

We are to fixed on height and height really is not the biggest factor at all, since reach (hands over head straight up) is much more important and wingspan (arms out to the sides) is 100 times more important in basketball.

What do I mean, well you can be 210cm in height but only have a reach, wingspann like a player with 190cm in height, that means that the player 210cm and the player 190cm have the same actual presence on the floor.

Some years ago this has become a much bigger factor in looking for talent and looking at top level you will not find many with - in wingspann or in reach, but you will find shorter players with enormous wingspann and reach. The supertall with T-rex arms is not there anymore,, because where to head is in the air is not important compaired to where the arms are.

Example from NBA in Kevind Durrant, he is 6,9, but has a wingspan of 7,5 player that is huge in what makes him the player he is. Thats is somewhere around +18cm, if he had -18cm he wouldn`t be in NBA.

He is and old article of turkey development and how the started looking at i some years ago.

Where i come from Sweden and in Denmark where I`m active right now I do believe most clubcoaches (in sweden usausally nationalteams coaches know) and player dont know their wingspann or reach, so how do the coaches know which players are most suitable for the higher levels?

Being short or shorter than most is not the end, but it maybe makes the possiblities less and instead of playing for the Los Angeles Lakers or Partizan Belgrad you might play for some other team.

Prove them wrong, dont give up, you can always become the best you can be and thats always good enough.

I became Sir Charles

Sir Charles Barkely was one hell of basketball player in his time and his number was 34 and on the 19th of july it was my team to be 34, but not on the jersey but in age.

I had a nice relaxing day and of course it had some basketball in it, with a meeting and a visit from sweden in Coach Richardson.

Otherwise I have vacation coming up on saturday and it will be nice, but summerpractice keeps going, but the attendence is like very up and down and right now many are away on holidays, so I go with the ones that are there. But this is very important still because, next summer there will automatically be more on the practices since they now about it.

Last practice there was also a talented womensplayer fron the club that right now play ball in the states in college and she asked if she could do some drills for her self on a side basket.

Of course a looked and it didn`take long before the individual coach in my was on high alert and of course I showed her and explained and said like listen to this, try this it will make sense and if you dont think so well dont do it again. If she changes it the future will tell I think so.....

Second clubsummerpractice

Damm, I guessed wrong we where 18 players today, but some where new and some cam also on the first practice. Still good and it was a good practice, BUT.....

Like I preached to my boys this season is how to practice, when practising.

Be a master of doing the drill or doing the drill get better, this is also what I have to preach a lot about now, since moste players they listen, do the drill, but not to get better just to do the drill and that is the same in every drill, gamesituation.

I`m trying to get them to see and understand the difference in doing the drill and doing the drill to get better. Its a huge difference that many players never learn since its has to be a pain in the ass coach preaching parrot to make them understand. While most coached are satisfied with the players doing the drill correctly but not the skill.

I ask a lot of Why`s and so far no kid has answered because I dont wanna get better, so the preacherman is preaching like no other.

Maybe some coaches will see changes in their players when season starts.

Was a little bit....

...nervous today, when it was time for the first club sommerpractice that I`m doing for alla players in the club. Normally after camp 2 here in hørsholm the gyms close and remain closed until normal times start again in begining of august.

I asked for times for my boys  team and got the answer NO the gyms are closed and I questioned that since we wanna develop elite players and well lets just say weather and outdoor courts is not something we are blessed with in nordic countries.

I said if somebody fixes so we can be in the gym I will hold 3 practices per week for all the kids in club and also older that wanna pratice.

The club listened and worked out a solution with the city of Hørsholm for this period in the summer.

Today was the first practice and since this is new I couldn`t guess how many that would come. Starting with something new and especially something that you have complained about to get is so much more fulfilling if its a success.

There came 24 players from born 01 to born 92 boys and girls and I think everybody enjoyed it. If there will be more than 24 in future practices that time will tell, but my guess is that there will be more.

On wednesday I know if my prediction is correct or not.

Had a blast anyway, to make a good practise for so many and with such a wide age range is something that makes my brain go in overdrive its stimulating and a challenge for me as a coach.

Proud as an rooster

Between the 2nd and 6th of july I was working in a camp here in Hørsholm with ages 97-99 practising and playing games between 09:00 and 18:30. Its hard work for the players but also for the coaches, but definitely worth it.

On the last day all of campers and coaches + parents and relatives gatter in the main gym where different prizes is handed out to the players. In all about 140 players this week on the camp and they where split up into 3 groups.

Euroleague
NCAA
NBA

They then get names of teams in that league, which they play as during the week. So games like Barcelona vs Partizan Belgrade is normal game in camp :-)

I hade many of my players from boys 98 on the camp and even more from my new team girls 98.
I think they where 22 of 28 at camp.

I have coached the boys for almost a year soon and standing there with the rest of coaches and seeing that so many of my boys got prizes, MVP`s, 3 point winner, coaches choice and more, just simply made me damm proud and to use old saying proud as rooster I was standing there waiting for camp to end.

What made me even prouder during the week was that several coaches said to me your boys has a tremendous work ethic. This is to my really big and that makes me even prouder.

Day 3 on a camp

I was today again watching some of the camps practises and this is day 3 always the hardest day, players and coaches are pretty tired after so many hours in the gym. Now the kids are feeling it in their body (also coaches lol) and some kids have one million excuses not to practice, som just because they are little tired. This camp has god rule and if you dont practice during the day, you dont play games at the end of the day.

I have been to others where suddenly the kids which couldn`t practice during the day now are healthy and wanna play and they have let them. Thats wrong in my book.

Had my second practice with the girls 98 and we went through the physical exercises again and we will do that again on wednesday and after that I hope most of them do it 3-4 or moree a week. I will see which ones that have taken up the challenge and whom just have facebooked and been at the beach.

After a great practice with the girls I went to where the coaches at the camp sleep and had some nice talks with them. Surrounded with other basketballidiots I just feel at home, its just like that.

Now time for bed and tomorrow, well I will propably go and watch some more at the camp, but now bed.

Missing it already

I admit I`m a basketballjunkie and I need my fixes or I go into withdrawel syndrom :-)

Its strange during the years I have heard so many being tired of basketball and they are glad that the season soon is over. They are excited about going on a long break and so on, well I never had that feeling about the actuall practices, games, but the other officework that I have had to do, to be able to do the stuff I know and enjoy that I have been tired of, Oh yes....

This week I have had only one practise with my new team in girls 98 (will coach boys and girls 98 next season).
Yesterday I was watching the camp for ages 99-01 practise and got a little quick fix atleast :-)

2nd to 6th I will be working on the camp for ages 95-98 and it will be so much fun. Its not just the actual practices but the coaches and the atmosphere that gets me that hight. This camp is fun because there are coaches from allover and that makes it very fun.

Why? Well the ball is round, and the basket are on 3.05, but there are so many different teaching technics, cultures, personalities, so discussions at night are tremendous.

This years camp there are coaches from, Croatia, Serbia, Lithuania, Sweden, Denmark, Spain.

Soon time to get on the dancefloor and my dancefloor is the basketbalcourt cant wait to dance.

Whats the purpose?

I have been to many camps during the years coaching or just watching the game I love.
In many cases I wonder whats the purpose of it?

To make money?
To develop god habits?
To have fun?
Getting new friends?

Non above is wrong as I see it, BUT I think every camp should have clear goals of what the camp want to achieve in that 4-5 days. For many of the younger players they practice in one camp as much as they do in 3 months during the regular season. So my question is, what have they gotten better at when the camp is over?

I have been to camps where they try to cover everything during 5 days and what does they players remember and what have they gotten better at?

Answer is very little of lots of stuff, I think after 5 days you should at least have 2 maybe 3 specific things that there is BIG improvement in.

It could be shooting technic, passing, Basketball position (looking like a basketball player), cutting (moving without the ball and so on.

A camp should put more tools in the toolbox and if it just puts half a hammer, half screwdriver, half a screw have it really fulfilled its purpose?

Well a answer is maybe the kids had fun, YES, but to quote a boss of a camp I was at " We dont care if you have fun, we care about if you learned something after this week is over" - Amen!

And guess what thoose kids learned something and had fun :-)

My first non basketball summer...

....in many many years. Instead working as much as possible at my job in a store. Will work at our Camp here in Hørsholm between 2-6 of july and after that I will hold 3 practises a week for all the kids in the club, this is something new here. Normally the gyms closes and kids who wanna practise have to pray that the weather goods are with them and in nordic countries the rarely are. The weather changes are so many and that restricts your chances to practice outside.

I`m very glad to got this going and I know that many kids will be very happy when they hear about it.
Creating players or talent management is in many ways your effort to give the players possibilites to reach their highest level, you give them what they need to succeed.

If you give them all that they need its now up to them to take what is given.

What do I mean by "Non basketball summer", well 1 camp and only 3 practises a week is for me non basketball summer.
I remember one of my greatest achievements as a coach at least its veru near that for me. When I was coaching in Lobas I decided to give the players that wanted good training and as many hours as needed to develop. I held the gym open for almost 30 hours every week. There where 5 players that really used what was given. One played division 1 ball in sweden for several years before knee injures stopped him at a young age. One girl made they national team but was cut just before European championship. That nationalteam later on won silver in WC, so to be cut from that team is maybe not so bad. She has now played highest womensleague for several years. She practised around 25 hour a week and her development that summer was incredable I actually had to dismiss her from the gym since she needed rest.

Two other girls both made the nationalteams (several years later) and now play in the highest league, they at a age of 11-12 practised about 15 hours a week.

The fifth one suddenly stopped playing after a stopped coaching him and the reasons are many, but the biggest he was pushed into playing to much on a to high level to soon. he wasn`t ready especially mentally to play and I think he just lost the passion that he used to have when he played.

That summer was one of the most fullfilling summer I have had as coach, dedicated players sweating and coming  back for more day after day, hour after hour. Thats a feeling I just love.

Before that summer I was almost into changing sports and becoming a soccer coach instead since basketball players where I was had a hard time putting in the time needed and I just hated that they didn`t wanna be the best the could be.

But thanks to Johan, Cris, Erika, Sofie and Marie that summer made me even more in love with the greatest game ever invented. Before that summer I had my doubts, but I learned if you give the players the possibilities there are always some that will go for it and thats the players I wanna coach.

I called it "Drills for skills" and my good skills they drilled. :-)

I already know that next season will be....

....the most fun I ever had as a coach. So many things happening and still i have a life on the side with normal work and more rest time than I have had in 7 years.

I will continue with boys 98 and their progress has been great so far and its much up to me to continue developing and in the last days I have found out which my other team will be for next season, but its not official yet, so I have to make you wait for that.

But to teams that have many things in common and the passion is there, so next season will be the most fun in 18 years and to be able to call that out already is just awesome :-)

Can hardly wait to get going witht he new team also :-)

Had a strange hot weekend

Well was supposed to work last saturday extra at my work, but that changed into giving the shift away and babysitting my sisters daughter in Sweden.

Hot like hell both in denmark and in sweden and whiel still in sweden this afternoon my phone rang and it was one of players on the phone: "I`m been bored all weekend can you come and train me in the gym?"

F**k second player from the team that has called me and asked this is for me on of the biggest things since I started coaching 18 years ago. "My answer I`m in Sweden, but cant you call someone on the team?"

I found out he did and they where up in a gym playing 3vs3 great stuff.

Tomorrow I will have the final young coaches academy for this season and the young coaches that will attend will have practical exercise with my boys.

15minutes in drilling them and I will give them feedback good and BAD and give them concrete ideas on what to do instead and so on, will be great fun. Just to bad that everyone cant attend, but thats just how it is.

Have started putting together the second Workout I have taped so far, but babysitting messed up my plan to be finished this weekend.
I call it "big"man series, so keep you eyes open.

Summerpractise makes the season easy

In the summerpractise many talented young basketball players future are decided. Are they on vacation from school or vacation from school and basketball?

Well, talent only takes you to a certain level and then its just plain STOP.

I`m glad to hear that 9 of my 16 players are going directly after season ends around the 20th of june to one camp and then after that most of the 16 will go to our own Camp here in Hørsholm and then there will be possibilitys to train until season starts again.

I´m really looking forward to how my kids have used there freetime from school.
Will there be any surprises in development after this summer, well I sure hope so :-)

Workout: Steve Nash Series

Have started to record some workouts I put together several years ago for my 98 boys, so they can practise wherever they will be this summer. There will be at least 6 more recorded and put up on the tube.

I call this one Steve Nash Series since it has a lot of hand eye coordination drills and he was/is a great passer and that has a lot to do with how coordinated eyes hands, feet are. So hope you like it, its not pro made and no retakes but made out of passion for the game.

One season has ended and another has begun

Well, summer is getting closer and closer here in Denmark and like the preacher I`m my players get to hear about summerpractice as much as possible. I have succeded in motivating them to practice extra during the season and in a few months I will know if I have done my job in motivating them to train like a possessed bballer this summer.

I have started to record more stuff in the practices for myself, my players and for everybody else that loves this beautiful game. Maybe it can help somebody, inspirere somebody how to do or not to do it, no matter what its there for all that have love for the game.

I have put up to short videos so far and here they are:
They haven`t been edited so you see good things and bad things and I added music so you dont have to listen to my voice screamning No, YES, athletic position and so on hehe :-)

I have a quest this summer and that is to record many, many drills and workouts with players and put them on the net. If I can fullfill my quest, well we will see in time.
Until then you have 2 videos here atleast.

May madness

Lakers is out that is madness, but my man Dirk is responsible for that so its OK.
Boston maybe on their way out againts Miami, hope the old men can bounce back and take the series, that would be so so great.

Panathaikos did it again and Majstore Coach Obdradovic took his 8th Euroleague titel...that spells RESPECT!

Sun is shining i denmark and after a relaxing visit in sweden its back to business again. Tonight practise witht he boys and tomorrow I was suppose to be free from work, but my boss called so now its work tomorrow, but who cares the sun is shining.

Did you have a nice easter?

Well, I did we were in Sweden and the city of Sodertalje playing the "nordic" champioships for youth clubteams. My club had success in the tournament with 2 wins and one bronze medal. Also 2 players became "best player in the nordic chamionships" one Scania King and one Scania Queen, there where also 3 more players that was selected to the all star teams.

My boys finished 8th in the tournament and for me it was actually the first time that I saw what the other countries has to offer. So now I have entered my second season with the boys with so much more knowledge of where we stand on a teamlevel and on the individual basis. So great for me as a coach to play this tournament against the topsteams from Sweden, Denmark and Finland that was represented in agegroup 98 this year.

But for the boys this is even more important and the knowledge they get from this games makes my preaching and job so so much easier since they see for themself that "hey this crazy coach we got is telling the truth".

I think one of the most important things as a youth coach is to make the team understand where they stand skillswise and as a team. The easiest way to do that is always to play againt really god teams, then there is no excuses or explanations to make the lacks go away. You have it on the scoreboard, videorecorder, stats and on the internet, there is no hiding.

So I`m so happy that my boys gets this games in this early age, they now know whats has to be done. Question is will they?

In september I will arrange a tournament here in Horsholm to get the season going with some quality games and hopefully we will continue to develop and get invited to the Nordics next year. But between september and april I need as a coach look somehting up since our game here at home will be very few that will give us what we want developmentwise.

We will see what happens and by the way I was satisfied where we at right know on a individual level and on a teamlevel. This season (started next season 3 days ago) we will add more bricks to build the foundation and strengthen what already is built.

Without a god foundation the "house" will eventually fall down no matter how much you repair it, so there is nos stress in what we need to learn and use in games, but there is stress to get a practisementally basketballwise and physically.

I love this game!

Creating good habits

Creating good habits is one of the most important things for us coaches and even more important for us coaching in countries where basketball aint that big.

When talking about the most important habit as I see its not any technical or foundamental part of the game, its the foundamental in school, in life, yeah in almost everyhting if you wanna get better at something.

Extra practise and findning soluation to practise more than others to become better than others. In the start of my coaching days I didn`t preach as much about this like I do know. Not giving you an excuse, but for me as a player practising extra and as much as possible wasn`t something somebody told me. I practised several hours extra each day and weekends alone or with a friend we could spend hour after hour just us to and the stereo shooting from downtown and playing 1 vs 1.

Dont exactly know why, but it just felt like something you had to do if you wanted t get better and I did.
So when I started coaching in many aspects I didn`t ask, didn`t find out, but instead assumed that everybodu thinks the same and some year later I got on track and understood thats not the case, far from it.

You as a coach, the leader of a group of kids playing a sport they like, your are their guide and the need a shitload of guidance to get on track in mnay aspects not just basketball.

But getting them to practise extra is foundamental if your kids will succeed later on as players. The habit of training many hours with a team, by yourslef gives them the chance to become the best they can be.
When I start with a new team I become a preacher man in many areas, but I always put extra push on practising extra. After the first preaching I usually wait a week or so and the ask the questions that makes many youngster get into the mood.

How many practised extra the last days?

You will always get somebody that says something like this:

The gym was locked!
I was on vacation!
I sprained my ancle!
I had schoolwork!

Just a few examples to make the point.

The gym as locked, Isn`t there more gyms did you check them?, There most be some streetcourt neart you? To cold, couldn`t you practise ballhandling in your garage, celler? Was you feet broken, so you couldn`t run? Cant you do pushups and situps and more in your room? Can you practise shooting techninc without a ball or basket, well yes you can?!

I was on vacation, OK, basketball is thw second biggest sport in the world with over 400 millions people playing it are you saying that there are no courts, basket where you where? Hell no!

I sprained my ancle, well you have the rest of the body you could practise so excuses dont work here.

I had schoolwork, NO you didn`t, you choose to have schoolwork, "but I had a test", test in the evening dont think so, "I studied", well bad planinng, when did you find out about that test? case closed!
Maybe you shouldn`t have played 10 hours of worthless killing computer games?

What I`m a doing with this, I`m not trying to make the look stupid but I try to use their excuses and give them solutions.
I`m also very clear with that if somebody doesn`t wann become better, thats also a choose, but if you wanna start now and not later, because later can be to late.

I have succeeded with this specially good the last few years and when this in place, you come to important stuff like WHAT do practise, when do practise extra and so on.

Some coaches, make extra practise as something they choose for the players, you WILL know practise so and som many hours and on this extra. I think this fails especially in non basketball countries, it has to come from players, but you can sure as hell lure them in to it.

I always say also to players that really become better that I fyou want to practise extra with me, asked me and if I have the time I will do it. Dont asnwer know I say qyickly since players wanna please their coach, if you wanna you come and tell me later and we find out when that can be done. This is my way, maybe not your but it works for me.

I did the same with my boys 98 that I started with in september last year and they got it many of them practise many hours extra every week its just so nice. Two players 12 years old has called me, asked face to face if we can do extra practises together thats just great and hearbreaking that I have had to say no all of the times. But it gives me extra energhy to give all I got in practises, these guys really want it, my job to deliver the goods.

I love my team and this outstanding sport, cant wait for next practise and that is tomorrow.

Did you miss me?

Not som many writting comments and the stats on these blogs never tell the truth, so I dont know if anybody missed me, but lets just say like it is been working like a lunatic the last 6 weeks and this week I have gotten a terrible tonsillitis, so sick like a dog is plain and simple what I`m. Allthough a little beter today and that is great since I have som young coaches education tomorrow and the be able to speak to them helps a lot.

I have for the first time in I dont know how many years just seen 1½ games of the march madness games and of the final four games I only have seen the first half of one of them. I haven`t had the time, but some years ago I would have seen them anyway, so you might say I have gotten a little bit wisser with age. Its painful to realize that you aint 20 years old anymore and can sleep little, work much and party hard "all the time" :-)

Actually the club that I coach in now Hørsholm Basketball hade one of their former players in the playoff games and thats pretty unique. He plays in Old Dominion and they played Butler in the first game and lost with 2 points, so could have been even better. I remember the kid from many years back and I remember what I saw and what I saw was possibiltys to become a force. At 2.11cm and moveable you are always wanted in the basketball world.

See his profile here: Anton Larsen

Not many coaches from the nordic countries can say they had a player in  the playoffs of the NCAA, well after this year some can celebrate with a extra brewed danish beer maybe :-)

Back to bed and try to sleep between all the coughing....And all the games missed? Well new madness next year ;-)

Third double seed to reach

The final four, before VCU rams there was LSU in 1986 and George Mason in 2006, now 11th seed Rams outplayed the nr 1 seed Kansas Jayhawks.

Because I´m been working like a maniac the last 4 weeks I have only seen small parts of games, so this game was actually my first full game and I truly enjoyed it.

Rams doesn´t play as static as many teams do and that makes them so much harder to controll. The had a couple of minutes in the second half where they started to hesitate and became stuck in the offense, but they shook it of them. But with a lot of help from Kansas, they didn`t reach their capacity at all of course VCU did a good job, but where Kansas failed was in their heads, the weren`t mentally prepaired for a underdog with a young coach that thinks he can move mountains and gets his players to beleive that also....and he did, they di move a mountain tonite.

Kansas is out, Duke is out.....11th seed VCU is still in it and they are going for gold. Believe that!

And by the way, great with a young coach only 33 years old, maybe people can understand that leadership, basketball knowhow is not garanteed just because you are old. Experience is age based, but coaching is not.

Will do this more

Last week I recorded som drill that I do with my kids and my goal is to record more and put it up for several reasons.

* For my boys to see themself
* Maybe inspiration for some other coach
* Help to some player searching the net for drills.

I will upload and put them here on my blogg, hope somebody likes them.
Here are 3 short clips put together with music. Its what I call combodrills, where we are working with many different aspects of the game and where I have choosen to take away the baskets, to get focus on other things than scoring.

We (basketball) have come a long way since...

Found this great video :-)

I just love old stuff with basketball in it, its so much fun to watch and this is actually the first nationally televised womens collegegame back in 1975.
Womens basketball has come a long way since 1975, the differences are remarkable, but shouldn`t the women refs have kept the skirts? Bring it back 2012, just kiddin :-)

Behind the back pass

Well, I´m a fan of showtime basketball, I grew up with Earvin "Magic" Johnson and showtime basketball at the forum like they always said. I have always liked players that do that little extra and as a coach does kind of players can give you lots of headaches but also so much more success if you can get them to use their showtime skills in the right time and in the right way.

Had two games with my kids boys98 this weekend and in a game which we won big there is one fastbreak that sticks to my mind. I have some players that I expect to do behind the back pass in some games, but this time is was a player that I never would have thought would do it.

It was a nice fastbreak, with 3 passes and 3 dribbles and finished off with a behind the back pass for the layup.

At the moment we have 3 focuses in the games and that is Rebounding, Fastbreak and Energy.
Starting with rebounding its so much easier to play  this game and even the old goats in coaching are changing their styles of play to adept to a defense in 5-5 that has developed into a wall and new ways is coming. You have use the speed and quickness of the players that are so athletic.

Well we try to play that way and its starting to look good. Rebounding is still a weakness, but will be a weakness for only a short while more.

Fastbreak is not just that we are trying to run like like crazy, but with a purpose and filling the 3 lanes and getting the ball up the court quickly to see what the defense gives us. If there aint a easy one, 1vs1 opertunity, 2-1,3-2 we get into motion offense and move the ball. If their is no quick pass up the court the PG can dribble the ball to side, middle or diagonaly to the other side.

Hard part about playing this way is at ealy ages and old ages making the right choices.

Energy is the third big part, my kids are so focused in doing the things right that they sometimes forget energy. I`m tlaking about givining energy to others and also I as a coach want players to play with a smile on their lips, not like robots that are programmed to do a certain thing. If they reach the higher levels they have lots of time beeing robots :-)

In pratises we have some other things we focus on
- Defense on ball, off ball
- Moving without the ball, backcut, frontcut, getting open, handoffs.(of course passing)
- Shooting technic
- Cordination, phsyical training, quickness

The third one shooting I see as a very important thing to learn early, I know some coaches dont think this way and thats fine, but we can see the problems with many american players, star players that first learn how to shoot when the reach the NBA or with personal coaches in the summers.

Being able to shoot the ball, opens up the game so much more and makes it so much easier doing all the things you practise. If you are a good team, many teams will just back off and play 2-3 meters away from the ball and stack up the 3 second area. A little bit older teams will eventuelllay go to zone and stand there.

Everyody agress that 1 vs 1 skills is very important and with a shoot at a early stage the players can reallt play one on one and the teams that dont try to play "real" defense not zagging all the time will be punished time and time.

Somebody said the behind back is used to little and I agree, but we need to teach WHEN and HOW it should be used or else, we get a whole other game.

Many of the nice things that we see on the court we have very few players to be thankful for starting with it.
Two of them is my favourite Magic Johnson and Pistol Pete

Here is a video of the great Pistol Pete

YCA`s first clinic a success in many ways

As some of you know I`m running a project here in Hørsholm Basketball that I call Young Coaches Academy and the main purposes of this is too educate new, young coaches and make it a little bit easier in becoming a coach.
That is done with different actions like, miniclinics theoretical and on the floor, leadership education, talks with leaguecoaches about coaching and so much more.

One thing is also that YCA aims to arrange two clinics each season and the first one was held on the second of march 2011.
I had four coaches doing clinics, 3 of them had 30 minute clincs and one of them had 1 hour clinic.
I have uploaded the clinic to youtube and the quality is what it is, but clinics you are suppose to see live, so see you next time. Next clinic will be in september of 2011 and will be teamoriented, while this clinic in the spring always will be on foundamentals, individual focus.

Here are the clinics:
Here is the first clinic of the evening and its Coach Igor Gavrilovic that talks and shows drills, technic in passing.

Second clinic with Coach Michael Boje-Formann about running technic, footwork, explosivness and more

The third clinic which is one hour by Coach Jan Mikulowski about outside/insidemoves from the perspective, what does the defense give you?
(clinic is divided into 5 parts because of problems with camera)

The last clinic of the evening was by Coach Johan Enbom, who had about functional strength training.

Next clinic will be in September and will have subjects that is teamoriented.
Hope that more take the opertunity too learn in September, YCA is here to stay

Interview with danish talent Jonas Zohore

You are one of the talents (born 91) coming out of Denmark, what are you plans for the future?
My plans are going to the NBA, euroleague or ACB It all depend on me and the daily practices...

You are playing on in spain as a profesional, how did that happen for you??
Well my ass coach Nemanja who was Head coach of 79érs 2 years ago helped me..He got a contract here, and gave me a chance to play here.. he knew the serbian coaches here and soon i was on a tryout one summer, everything worked good out after those daye!
What are your thought after playing pro ball in spain for more than half a season, whats the differences and so on?
There are a lot of differences. first of all just to have 4 coaches arround you on practice, telling you what to do, explain and giving you advices helps a lot.. Basketball is a lot bigger and more serious than back home in Denmark.. here is the 2énd most played sport after football. Here is not only the 2-3 players from US who can bring and give some to the team, a lot of teams have a long bench who gives some important and good to there teams, including young players deffently young players..Then if you are a young player, i would recomend Spain. Spain is diffently the place to be if you want to get further in you karrier as a pro player. the oppoutunities is way higher down here, a lof of good players, league and scouting and so..And the level og leagues high.
Im lucky to have some excelent coaches who has a lot of exsperience and contacts. I almost have some NBA scouts or European scouts coming to oure club every 2 week waching our system, practice and games.. That not something you just get, defently not in Denmark! Only something you can admire and be honored and lucky to have!

You have been with the youth nationalteams several times, can you tell the world a little bit of some great experiences playing international with the nationalteam?
I started play basketball as 15 years old. now im soon 20.. my first apperance to the youth national team, was as a 2 year player at U-16 after that i have been there since. geting to play against a lot of good countries, teams and good players.. the best succses i had, was with the national team was my 1 year with U-18 in Hungary, we end up, as number 8 out of 20 teams. in that fact it were my 1 European championship and i remember how excited and a little nervous i was.. It was also the year were a lot of great players attended, while some of them now are playing Euroleague or NBA..This summer im maybe going for the last time, as youth player to Bosnien in Sarajevo with U-20.. I just not clear about my plans during this summer..
The other thing is, you cant exspect not to end up ranging over number 14 when u dont have a serious schedule and planification about the national team. to have 5 practices during a preparation for European championship is so not pro.. even placing 2 of the days in one week, and then wait 2-3 weeks for next practice and without frindly games is hopeless!

What skill are you working extra hard on right now?
A lot. im doing a lot of repeating in lowpost. such as reading defence, hookshots, fadeaway shots, dribble shots.. Also shots from outside the post, one or two dribble from 3 pointline and finishing, kevindurant style..

Quick 6 favourites
Favourite team in Europe? I never really like these question, beacause i dont have a real answer to them.. but i wacht a lof ot ACB and Euroleague, and you need to admire the game og Barcelona. and i also like Real Madrid as they are the team I see most while im living near to centrum.
Favourite player in Europe?

Favourite team in NBA? I like Wizards and Boston
Favourite player in NBA? I most say Dwight howard as one of them, I also like Javale Mcgee beacause i see myself playing like him.. Amare stoudemire i like to, I could keep going, lebron james, derrick rose, kevind durant and so on..

Favourite team in College? DONT HAVE ANY. not into college ball.. Not in my future list

What tips would you give to other younger players trying to fulfill their dream in becoming a pro basketball player?
Make the right choices, work hard, belive that you can do what you want, play everywhere, playing games and asking yourself why u practice? but same time be humble, not everything goes well.. If you dont already work everyday then ask youself if that is what you really want to do..

Any tips to coaches about handling young players that you can give?
Make them discipline and that they respect you even if they dont like you.

Unlucky season in some aspects

My club Hørsholm Basketball has a troublesome season when it comes to gyms being damaged this season.

It started this summer already when the where gonna change the floor to a new one and the day that was done after some delays there was a crazy rainfall here in Hørsholm and some places there came 18cm`s of rain.

That totally ruined the totally new floor and they had to start to throw that out, but the old floor laying under was also ruined så long long time. For the club it was a problem, leagueteams had practise in other gyms and sometimes in other citys to get full court practises.

Another full size gym was being renovated and that renovation was dealyed and couldn`t be used until december.

But it wasn`t just the main gym that was wrecked, the main gym for youth games was ruined also by the rain.

So now the club stod there with out 3 gyms and lots of teams that wanna practise it meant a lot of work and less training for the teams and in smaller gyms.

We got the two gymas back in december that was ruined and they where now very nice, in january its was time again. Another gym that has one big gym and a little one in it was was closed since they discovered that the roof was about to fall down. That one i still closed and maybe after the summer, that ment problems again.

Now last week one of the big gyms that had a makeover, somebody smashed the backboard and that backbord is not the same as the reservs and had to be ordered and that takes 2 weeks.

I ran 3 vs 3 defense drill using that side of the court without any basket, was fine not a missed shoot :-)

That means more problems again.....we need a break from gymproblems or we need warmer weather and that aint gonna happen in cold, cold scandinavia.
